Burton & District Cycling Association 50
Saturday 8th August

Paul Holdsworth's hopes of a high placing in the British Best All Rounder competition were given a boost last Saturday when he recorded the fast time of 1 hour 45 minutes 27 seconds in the Burton & District CA 50 mile time trial. This was an improvement of over 3 minutes on his previous best time this year.

Holdsworth's ride only gave him the 10th position overall in the race, but this was possibly the outstanding 50 of the season. As a Saturday afternoon event on a fast course it was likely to be oversubscribed, but even so the organiser must have been surprised to receive as many as 200 entries. The maximum number of riders permitted is 120, so 80 intending competitors were disappointed, with the slowest qualifying time accepted being two hours exactly, and this led to a very competitive result with, for example, eight other riders finishing on the same minute as the Hounslow man. The event winner was the reigning national Best All Rounder Nik Bowdler with 1.40.01. (1 hour 40 minutes is a 30 mph average for 50 miles).

However, the most striking ride of the day came from Julia Shaw (UTAG Yamaha) whose time of 1.46.49 is a new ladies national competition record. The previous record was held by Jill Reames (Swaledale CC) at 1.47.48 and had stood since 1997.

Unfinished roadworks on the course threatened to cause the race to be cancelled, but the organiser's ingenuity overcame the problem, although not before Holdsworth had received a message while driving to the HQ to warn him the event might not take place. He considered turning back, but decided to chance carrying on because he had just passed a long tailback on the southbound carriageway. Perhaps every traffic jam has a silver lining!

Another Hounslow & District Wheelers member achieved time trial success recently. Brent Skinner competing in the National Fire Service and Police Championships won the 25 Mile Retired Section title with a time of 1 hour 0 minutes 59 seconds.
